First Capital Sailing Nationals 2025

SUCCESSFULLY HELD AT CROW ISLAND

Colombo: The First Capital  Sailing Championship 2025 successfully concluded at the picturesque Crow Island Sea Front on February 25 and 26, with Rear Admiral G.S.D Weerasuriya, Director General of Services  Sri Lanka Navy, presiding as chief guest.

The nationals were held by the Yachting association of Sri Lanka, the National Sports body for Sailing in Sri Lanka, with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy.

“FIRST CAPITAL”  sponsored the event this year

The two-day event kicked off in beautiful champagne-sailing conditions with sunny skies, warm seas, and 10-12 knots of wind, gusting occasionally up to 20 knots.

This year’s Nationals saw a record number of 89 sailors with 69 boats fighting for medals in seven classes. The navy, clubs as well as school children specially from Jaffna & Mirissa participated in the various events open for both men and women. All sailors sailed 6 races, discarding their worst performance. The remaining results were averaged for their final tally.

Director General of Sports Rear Admiral (Rtd) Prof Shemal Fernando  commended the standard of sailing displayed at the Nationals and called Sri Lanka’s sailing “the future of tourism.”

The GP14, Enterprise, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7  Classes were won by Sri Lanka Navy, and the ILCA 4 Class was won by Muazaam Imtiaz of Royal Collge Colombo. Binal Perra of Royal College Colombo won the Optimist Class (Under 15 event).

Speaking at the event, Chief Guest Rear Admiral Weerasuriya  highlighted the history of Sri Lanka, stating that the country has been sailing-nation since ancient times.

“Sri Lankans are no stranger to sailing, and their love for the sea is deeply rooted in their culture, being inhabitants of an island nation. The emergence of a new generation of young sailors who are willing to take on challenges, will benefit Sri Lanka’s tourism industry greatly in the future,” said the Rear Admiral.

“All these events were successfully held as a result of our obtaining a suitable water front in Crow Island with the blessings of the Sri Lanka Navy,” said the COO of YASL, Sarath Kuragama, who delivered the vote of thanks.

He thanked the Sponsor “First Capital” for their generous Contribution.

The Secretary of the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka Mr. Devin Goonawardena delivered the Welcome address.
